A Walk to the Bus

A 3D game where the player is caught in an ever-repeating loop while trying to leave the polluted city of Burnsville by bus. But as they walk through the city to the station every day and interact with the environment, they see the world around them change.

About this project

This game was created by a small international team during the iLRN Fuser Game Jam Paths to the future in 2021. The task was to create a game reflecting some of the UNs 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The game won the award for Best Game Design and Best Game Overall.

My contributions

Additionally, I designed the level on paper and then used free assets to build the environment and to set dress the level in a way that communicated the path and goal to the player.

My tasks in this project were:

  • Game Design
  • Level Design
  • Core Feature Design
  • Narrative Design
  • SetDressing

My contributions specifically were designing the core game play concept and features of the game. This included the logic for the repeating loop of the game and how to progress, as well as communicating a sense of progression to the player even though the level was started over and over again. I decided to do this with subtle changes in the environment in addition to a dialog system. This sytem was also designed and written by me, adding more depth and backstory to the game.
